At Fundación de Alba, we are committed to promoting policies that guarantee equitable and effective access to cancer services for all citizens. As part of our commitment, we are one of the pioneering organizations promoting the Ley General de Cáncer Initiative, a legislative proposal that seeks to establish a solid and comprehensive legal framework for the prevention, detection, treatment and survival of cancer in Mexico.

Guiding Principles of the Ley General de Cáncer

The Comprehensive Ley General de Cáncer is based on several essential guiding principles:

• Right to life and survival: Ensure that all cancer patients have access to treatments and care that allow them to fight for their lives and improve their survival rates.
• Dignity of the person: Ensure that each patient receives respectful and dignified care, regardless of their condition or socioeconomic status.
• Equity and non-discrimination: Promote equality in access to oncological services, eliminating any form of discrimination.
• Effectiveness in care: Optimizing resources and procedures to provide effective and efficient oncology medical care.
• Institutional cooperation and coordination: Promote collaboration between various institutions and sectors to offer a comprehensive and cohesive approach in the fight against cancer.

The Beginning of the Movement

In June 2022, discussions began in Mexico on the need to promote a Ley General de Cáncer. Recognizing the urgency of this initiative, 13 Civil Society Organizations, including Fundación de Alba, formed a Working Commission dedicated to promoting this proposal from civil society, in collaboration with five Senators of the Republic belonging to various parliamentary groups.

A Year of Collaboration and Effort

For a year and two months, we held multiple rounds of roundtable discussions, bringing together more than 200 specialists from the medical-oncology, academic, financial, research and social sectors. These collaborative efforts were fundamental to structuring a preliminary document that would serve as the basis for the creation of the Ley General de Cáncer Initiative.

Ley General de Cáncer Initiative is not just a set of regulations, but a commitment to the health and well-being of Mexicans. Through this proposal, we seek to create a more fair and efficient health system, where every person affected by cancer has the opportunity to receive the best possible treatment and live with dignity.

At Fundación de Alba, we will continue to work tirelessly alongside our allies and legislators to make this law a reality, and thus contribute to a future where cancer is confronted with all the necessary resources and determination.
